Excerpts from The Scholarly World of Vermeer, Waanders Publishers; The Hague: Museum van het Boek/Museum Meermanno-Westreenianum, 1996:

"A striking feature of the relatively small number of paintings that comprise the ouevre of Johannes Vermeer is the prominent place accorded to maps and globes One example is the wall map of the province of Holland made by Balthasar Florisz, van Berckenrode and published in 1621, which appears in three of Vermeer’s pairings including Officer and a Laughing Girl."

"The use of maps as wall hangings in contemporary Dutch houses went beyond the desire for cartographic information. Maps were also used to express status, to promote a better understanding of history or politics or to take the place of paintings."

"As there is a certain parallel in intellectual and artisanal aspirations between the makers of impressive cartographic objects and painters, one might perhaps infer that the prominent and precise depiction of wall maps and globes expresses Vermeer’s esteem for his fellow artists. Such esteem might also have been fueled by the mathematical training painters underwent in order to learn how to paint according to the rules of perspective – training that was given by surveyors and cartographers."
